Ft. Jesup, Louisiana
Fort Jesup is near the border between Louisiana and Texas.
It is a wilderness in bayou country, wet and hot.
HARRIET SCOTT (V.O.)
Dr. Emerson meets Eliza Irene Sanford the youngest daughter from a prominent St. Louis family who is visiting the fort in the winter.
Sanford came from a family that as a rule did not free slaves.
The Sanfords only sold a slave when he or she became too troublesome to keep
Eliza Irene Sanford marries Dr. Emerson in February 1838.

Dr. Emerson summons us, we are still at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota territory.
We go rafting over one thousand miles down the mighty Mississippi River.
As we travel in the waters of free territories we have to decide whether to seek freedom or return to Dr. Emerson at Ft. Jessup.
Dred says that we should continue to Ft. Jessup. I convince him that if we have children that he should reconsider our freedom.
